The Himalayan Institute Hospital Trust was founded by Swami Rama and is located in Northern India in the state of Uttar Pradesh, the largest state in population and the fourth largest in size. Seventy-five per cent of its population of more than 110 million do not have access to adequate medical care.
Swami Rama's vision to bring medical services to the millions of people (most of whom are poor) who have little or no healthcare in northern India began modestly in 1989 with an outpatient program.
Today that vision has taken the form of a medical complex located 125 miles north of New Delhi between Dehra Dun and Rishikesh. This complex includes a large state-of-the-art hospital offering a full range of medical specialties and services; a medical college; a combined therapy program that joins the best of modern medicine with the time-tested wisdom of traditional methods of healthcare; a rural development program that has adopted more than 150 villages; and housing facilities for staff, students, and patients' families.
The project was conceived, designed, and implemented by Swami Rama, who was a native of this part of India. Now, this institution is being recognized as one of India's best medical centers.
