The pilgrimage to the Kumbha Mela in Allahabad this year was unprecedented in magnitude. What brought 70 million people to Allahabad in January 2001?

Any pilgrimage is both an inner and outer journey, and though the outer journey may be by the same means, the inner journey is an individual matter. Tradition brought many pilgrims to the mela to bathe in the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna and Sarasvati Rivers at Allahabad.

The strength of their belief in the redemption of bathing in the Ganga, particularly at this astrologically auspicious time time, enabled them to endure the many hardships and uncertainties of the pilgrimage to the Kumbha Mela.
